In this tutorial we look at the reactions of group 2 metals e.g. with water and how the outer electrons influence this reactivity. Flame tests are used as an analytical method for various group 1 and 2 metals. We look at how to carry these out and and the colours observed. It’s also important to know a bit about why colours are observed under a flame. Solubility trends of metal hydroxides and sulphates and other trends of the group 2 metals such as melting point, atomic radius are also looked at.
